About Maven Sports Medicine

Maven Sports Medicine is a physical therapist-owned, private practice. The owners of Maven, Dr. Jerry Yoo and Dr. Taylor Lee, are doctors of physical therapy who have been practicing for nearly 10 years and have also been in the fitness industry for over 15 years. They have varied clinical expertise ranging from general orthopedics, sports medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics. A large part of their vision was to bridge the rehab and fitness gap with their combined experiences to help patients take charge of their physical health and wellness.

In 2007, Maven Sports Medicine planted its first location inside Body Designs Fitness Center in Paramus, NJ. With their success in establishing a healthy relationship with the gym members and personal training staff, Maven went on to secure a second gym location in 2009 in Cliffside Park; Palisadium Fitness, USA became the home of Maven’s second office. Maven Sports Medicine has aspiring plans to continue creating new locations in the northern NJ and NY areas.

Maven's History:

Maven Physical Therapy, LLC was born on Dec, 6, 2006.  Homegrown in Paramus, the “M” has been alive and well in steady refinement of its rehab and fitness philosophy.  Maven began as a vision 12 years ago whilst Taylor was a fledgling DPT.  The vision to somehow make rehab and fitness work together became clearer as he continued to pursue personal fitness and life-long health.

Fast forward a few more years in the field, Taylor pulled in a key reinforcement to bring the dream alive.  Enter Dr. Jerry Yoo, (aka, the doc) an experienced pediatric PT at the time of their first meeting and wannabe triathlete extraordinaire, who would later on become his business partner and help complete the details and specifics for what Maven would be founded on clinically.  Together, they worked on the core values for what makes the “M” sing its tune along with the A, V, E, N.  The acronyms helped define what they wanted Maven PT to be all about regarding its clinical model, fitness approach, and business philosophy.

What Maven is not:

We’re not your typical PT hanging up a shingle and just wants to put you on an electrocuting, sorry, stimulating machine, then rub some lotion and gel on you and call it, “PT”.  Not even close.

We’re not even your typical PT who tells you to go to the corner by yourself to pull on a rubber band for your knee pain or to rotate from exercise machine to machine without clinical purpose and benefit.

Finally, we’re not even that PT trying to combine fitness with rehab just because it makes business sense (I didn’t even know PTs knew anything about fitness)…and worse, doesn’t even live OR look the part.  Sorry, PTs out there, you know who you are.

What Maven IS:  Well, to answer that, a few questions back at you, yes you.

Have you been to physical therapy for an injury? Ok, well…

When was the last time your DPT had you doing burpees or pull ups to get you FUNCTIONALLY stronger as you recovered for your ACL tear?

When was the last time your DPT referenced a journal article or even read one for that matter?  Sorry, Men’s Health doesn’t count…

When was the last time your DPT handed you a kettlebell (what’s a kettlebell?) and told you to hoist one of these bad boys over your head WHILE you LUNGE to address your balance, “core”, FUNCTIONAL strength of the shoulder, hip, and knee for your back pain you came in with?

When was the last time your DPT provided recommendations on diet to maximize your injury recovery?  Ask your PT what he/she had for lunch and that should tell you what they know about nutrition and how important it is for their overall health.

When was the last time your DPT actually worked out?  You should ask, AND that should tell you a lot about the kind of care and expertise you will be getting…or the kind of rehab and return to activity path you will be set on.

It’s just the truth.

Is this legal?  YES

Maven exists because we believe that to be exceptional at helping restoring physical health and well being, especially when someone is injured, it’s essential….critical to marry fitness and physical “therapy”.  PTs have the ideal academic and experiential base to be the experts of the movement system.  We can’t tell you how much Zoloft to take or even prescribe it for that matter, but hey, do you want your shoulder to feel better without meds?  You want to be able to bench, burpee (there’s that word again), or box jump?  Ok, then, yes, we are the go-to professionals for your physical needs.  We can break down any movement pattern, piece it back together, and/or modify it to keep you or a loved one safe during exercise, sport, and ultimately life.

Sometimes, just having our esteemed “expert opinion” to tell you, “listen, you can’t do that yet” is therapeutic in and of itself and may be all you need to get well again and return to your favorite physical activity.

We believe exercise must be safe, effective, AND efficient.  If exercise or an exercise program does not take into account all three, then you’re wasting the most valuable commodity known in the metropolitan area…TIME.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to one of the Mavens, please contact us!   We’ll be happy to help you any way we can!
