As with other joints, osteoarthritis of the knee results in pain during weightbearing activities as a result of degenerative changes to the knee resulting in increased wear of the articular cartilage and, thus, increased contact of the highly-innervated subchondral bone.
Physical Therapy Intervention- Evidence in the literature has demonstrated the positive effects of a guided exercise program on managing osteoarthritis symptoms. Strengthening the muscles around the knee may be beneficial in helping to reduce the bone-bone contact. Cardiovascular activities and dietary changes are often implemented as an adjunct to rehab when weight reduction is needed to help unload the joint. Aquatic rehab is also a very effective modality where strengthening the knee can be performed in a gravity-reduced medium.
When conservative management is unsuccessful in helping a patient manage their pain symptoms, joint replacement is usually the next step.
