"SLJ" is essentially inflammation of the apophyseal region where the proximal patellar tendon attaches to the inferior pole of the patella (apophysis). SLJ is a growth related apophysitis (as it typically afflicts young males between the ages of 9-12) usually as a result of repetitive stress to this apophyseal region, rapid hyperflexion or deceleration. The pain is located just below inferior pole of the knee cap.

Physical Therapy Intervention- With modified activity and a guided return to sports, athletes can overcome this "disease". Manual therapy may be indicated when the pathology becomes chronic (lasts > 4 weeks). Anti-inflammatories may be prescribed by a physician.
